Five Tips for Solar Shoppers
1.Homeowners who receive multiple quotes, save the most.
When shopping for solar it is very important to receive multiple quotes. Solar is not a small investment. A recent report by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recommended that consumers compare as many solar options as possible to avoid paying inflated prices offered by the large installers in the solar industry. Homeowners who receive 3 or more quotes can expect to save $5,000 to $10,000 on their solar panel installation.
2. The largest companies are the most expensive.
A recent report by the U.S. government found that large installers are $2,000 to $5,000 more expensive than small solar companies. If you receive quotes from some of the big installers in solar, make sure you compare those bids with quotes from local installers to ensure you don’t overpay for solar. At Solaire, our homeowners save on average $3000.
3. Always compare the equipment.
It is important to consider the equipment that is being installed on your roof. Although, quality products might cost more, their warranties and quality can save you lots of money on the back end. Larger solar companies tend to offer less favorable products to their clients for a higher price. With this in mind, when it comes to top rated solar panels you should not be paying $10,000 more for the installation. Some solar companies when using quality top tier panels tend to inflate their cost.
4. Know how to calculate price per watt (PPW).
In the solar industry pricing is based on the Price Per Watt or PPW. When receiving solar quotes, some of the actual system sizes can vary base on the panels that are being used. By knowing the PPW you can find a common ground in all your solar proposals and have a better chance of receiving a better deal. Here is calculation for PPW:
Total System Cost divided by System Size in watt.
Solar system sizes are measured by KW. To find the amount of watts in the system you would multiple the system size by 1000. There for a 5 KW solar system would be 5000 watts.
5. Check Their Reviews.
The solar industry is one of the fastest growing industries. With the growing number of solar companies, it is important to check out their reviews and credentials before purchasing. A great solar sales representative can tell you all the good things about their company, but we all know why they are there. If the solar company you are receiving a quote from is not on any social media, Google, Yelp and Solar Reviews, this should be a red flag.
